Shrimps baked in tomato sauce with feta cheese (garides saganaki)

I didn’t like shrimps before. It turned out that the moment I tried them made according to this recipe – they became my favorite dish (when it comes to seafood). The following recipe can be improved, depending on what we have in the fridge or what flavors we like.

About 4 servings:
– 0.5 kg of large shrimps (preferably those with heads)
– 20 dag hard feta cheese
– 1/4 cup of oil
– 0.5 cans of tomato sauce or 2 ripe grated tomatoes
– 1 medium onion, finely chopped
– 1 green pepper, chopped
– 3-5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
– salt, pepper, a pinch of sugar

Peel the tomatoes and grate on a grater. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and lightly fry onions, garlic and peppers. We add tomatoes, sugar, salt and pepper. We pour 2 cups of water to make more sauce. Lightly boil the sauce. We pour it into an ovenproof dish and put peeled shrimp in it. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes (200-250 degrees). After this time, remove from the oven, add ground feta cheese and bake in a hot oven for another 10-15 minutes.

WARNING! The same can be done in the pan – instead of in the oven. Ie. make a sauce, arrange shrimps, boil them in this sauce 10-15 min. under cover. Then add the crushed feta and leave for 3 minutes. on reduced heat under cover. Feta should not melt.

We serve this dish with bread. Soaking its pieces in sauce, we make “papara” (papara – pieces of bread soaked in sauce).
